Lent Day 8 – Honour thy Father and thy Mother

Scripture Reading: Exodus 20:12

After God, our parents must be the next in line to be respected and honored. They are the instruments of our earthly existence. Thus, their values and places in our lives must never be undermined.
Irrespective of the level of our attainment, we must avoid exhibiting puffy attitude, and should not be distended whilst relating with our parents.
Disobedient children as well as those that dishonor their parents are mostly visited with Karma. Whilst turning adult, their children often react even much worse than they did to their own parents.

Children with deficiency in good characters like the biblical Absalom, meanwhile, either self-destruct themselves or have the seeds that become the pains of their lives.

Honour thy Father and thy Mother

Whilst Absalom was arrogantly and ferociously after his father’s kingdom, Reuben, however, defiled his father’s bed (Genesis 35:22, 32; 1 Chronicles 5:1). The former paid the supreme and the latter had his rights as firstborn given to the sons of his brother, Joseph.

Proverbs 23:22 says that children should listen to their father, who gave them life and should not despise their mother when she is old.
The reference to old age is to establish for children that irrespective of the advancement in age of their parents and their expected weakling in strength, they should still be given their honour.

Children must obey their biological parents as well as their parents in the Lord, and through this, it will be well with them and they will live long on earth (Ephesians 6:1-3)
Under no circumstances should children make their parents feel sad and regret ever given birth birth to them.

According to the scripture, children are the heritage from God and those that have them are blessed (Psalm 127:3-5). Thus, parents should always be happy when seeing their children.
Therefore, any child that makes his/her parents sad, is invoking untoward hardship upon himself/herself.

May we not become a child of Belial, through Christ our Lord.

Memory Verse:
